DANSIC15 Urban Uplift puts urban environments in the spotlight. We ask how social innovation can transform socially vulnerable neighbourhoods into sustainable cities.
The challenge is one of dissonance as well as aspiration. On its own, a residential area cannot be raised to become a metropolis, which is classified by being a city of millions – both demographically and economically. The aspiration is, however, found in the very same impossibility. Imagine if sustainable cities started in socially disadvantaged areas. Imagine if we began to see the great resources that exist in socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods and used these as building blocks for the sustainable metropolis – a transformation that can be beneficial to the city as a whole.
